What is the MBA Personal Impact module?

Personal Impact is a Skills Module which is designed to help the student to understand and develop personal and professional best practice.

Understanding and development are demonstrated during exercises designed to assess the degree to which students can show us the presence of the professional skills we associate with the key tenets of Personal Impact.

The students are assessed by way of a short individual presentation that showcases personal impact and presence and by submission of a written assignment that demonstrates understanding and application of the key theories concepts and frameworks we have explored throughout the module. In addition to the classroom work students are expected to take part in virtual discussions both to reflect on and apply their learning and to develop an on-going peer learning network.

So why teach Personal Impact to MBAs?

Personal Impact is the central player in the MBA programme’s objective to contribute to the creation of self-aware self-confident graduates grounded in reality. The overarching aim is to help students to develop their thinking behaviour and performance in order that they can ‘be themselves more with skill’.

As we explore Personal Impact we look carefully at the notion of building a personal brand ‘from the inside out’. This development of a personal brand will build on the psychometrics completed by the students as well as build on the group’s investigation of key personal impact determinants such as the individual’s relationship with concepts such as values principles trust and credibility.

By the end of the module students will have a clear sense of their authentic self and how congruently this aligns behaviourally both when all is well and when the individual is under pressure. This is a critically important aspect of the MBA for individual students as it helps them to prepare themselves confidently for the world of work to which they intend to return.

Grounded individuals who have more self-awareness more personal presence and more personal resilience tend to be followed more willingly listened to more closely respected more deeply. These are important characteristics and important benefits for tomorrow’s leaders.
