Stephan Schubert

BA, MA, PhD

Stephan Schubert is a faculty member at Ashridge where he is a leading contributor to executive development programmes in the Middle East. Stephan has extensive experience in many key industries, including energy, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, construction, professional services and government. His subject expertise ranges from strategy to leadership, organisational behaviour and emotional intelligence. A seasoned traveller, Stephan has worked on client assignment in over 25 countries, from Chile to China. His clients include Philips, Vodafone, Lufthansa, Sinopec and Munich Re.

Before joining Ashridge, Stephan gained over 15 years of experience as facilitator and consultant in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, working with multi-national organisations and government departments.

Stephan holds teaching positions at business schools in France, Denmark and Poland and has a BA in Business Administration, an MA in HR Management and a PhD in Industrial Economics. He is comfortable working in English, French and German.

The Tale of Eloise and Abelard or Tough Love for HP-Compaq

The case study is based on the merger contest that opposed in late 2001 and early 2002 the management teams of Hewlett Packard and Compaq to the heirs of the Hewlett and Packard company founders. By working through industry notes and company profiles, students will analyse a controversial corporate strategy decision. They will be led to understand market fundamentals and competitive positions in the computer industry, work out arguments in favour of the merger and against it, look for alternative proposals, and assess whether the merged company is well prepared for the challenges ahead.
