Multigenerational organisations: A challenge for technology and social change

This paper analyses demographic and organisational trends associated with an ageing workforce and introduces the articles in the special issue of Technological Forecasting and Social Change on 'Ageing2Agility: Multi-stakeholder Technological Forecasting for the Multi-generational Challenges in the Organisation'. It is argued that the impact of ageing on organisations is both inherently inter-disciplinary and relatively neglected compared with other fields such as demographics and economics. Organisations throughout the world must address the issue of integrating fast-growing Generation Y populations into workforces led and managed by people with very different (often more traditional cultural) life experiences. Addressing these issues presents challenges for technological forecasting and opportunities for innovation. Organisations will have to adapt to both to ongoing technological development and social changes such as an aging ageing workforce and customer base.

First the context of ageing is explored with a particular focus on the demographic and social changes faced by organisations. Five ‘myths of ageing in organisations’ are discussed followed by three areas where research is relatively underdeveloped: the concept of a ‘multi-generational workforce’; the market opportunities offered by ageing; and the linkage between ageing and technology. The contributions of the papers in this special issue are outlined, followed by a conclusion on the need for new directions in research that link technological and social factors related to ageing in organisations.

Adaptive Bayesian Agents

This article brings together two views of organisations: resource-based theories (RBT) and social network analysis (SNA). Resource-based theories stress the importance of tangible assets, as well as less tangible ones, in the competitive advantage and success of organisations. However, they provide little insight into how resources are brought together by an organisation to generate core competencies that provide a source of differentiation that cannot easily be reproduced or substituted. In contrast SNA provides insight into the complexity of organisations and the interaction between the people within them, taking account of uncertainty and complexity. However, neither perspective gives significant insight into how organisations evolve over time, and how their competitive position is sustained or eroded.

The Impact of Project Portfolio Management on Information Technology Projects

The ever-increasing penetration of projects as a way to organise work in many organisations necessitates effective management of multiple projects. This has resulted in a greater interest in the processes of project portfolio management (PPM), with more and more software tools being developed to assist and automate the process. Much of the early work on PPM concentrated on the management of IT projects, largely from the perspective of the management of resources and risk. Many of the recent articles have been by vendors of the software, promoting the value of the PPM process. However, the claims made in those articles are typically only supported by anecdotal evidence. In this paper, we assess whether there is a correspondence between the use of PPM processes and techniques, and improvements in the performance of projects and portfolios of projects. Based on our findings, we introduce a three-stage classification scheme of PPM adoption, and present a strong correlation between (1) increasing adoption of PPM processes and a reduction in project related problems, and (2) between PPM adoption and project performance.

What's Behind Successful IT Projects?

This article is based on specific research into thirty projects with a range of technologies in a large multinational company – many of them similar projects in different business units with varying results. Success was measured in terms of business value including ROI and strategic impact, not just whether the project was delivered on-time and on-budget. The research sought to identify the main factors underpinning success.

Intelligent Service Delivery - The Challenge For IT

Demonstrating the business value of IT - and its value for money - is now more challenging than ever. At the heart of this issue is the delivery of IT services to the business. Success in demonstrating the business value of IT is dependent on measuring and managing the service. A "service response" approach to ensure the service can be shown to meet business perceptions is essential. This practice of Intelligent Service Delivery has a high payoff and can be implemented rapidly. Specifically, this paper outlines: - The IT service delivery challenge - The five dimensions of Intelligent Service Delivery - How to make IT service delivery meaningful and measurable - Introducing 'Service Response' - The business case for Intelligent Service Delivery
