Leadership skills for the 21st century

What skills do you need to lead in the face of today's global challenges? Are you fit to survive in this changing new world? Climate change and other pressing environmental and sustainability issues urgently require transformational change. In this article, Matthew Gitsham and Kai Peters challenge readers with the findings of Ashridge-led research presented to the united Nations in December 2008 which reveal that although 76% of senior executives say that leaders in their organisations need the knowledge and skills to respond, fewer than 8% believe they are currently developing them very effectively.

Diversity and Good Governance

Governance is generally viewed in shareholder terms and is defined by the rights and responsibilities of directors, as well as by a compliance view of the audit function. By looking at the development of governance frameworks in the UK, US, Canada, India and South Africa it becomes apparent that a broader view of governance which takes a stakeholder view has broad implications.

The India Effect

India's offshoring sector has been driven by cheap labour and a competitive culture. But as the country's low-cost advantage diminishes, Indian firms will need to find innovative ways to stay ahead of new emerging economies. With an annual economic growth rate of around seven to eight per cent, India has emerged as a future economic superpower. But is the country's impressive growth down to lower costs alone? Once India's cost advantage diminishes, will future growth shift to companies in other low-cost economies? We believe that cheap labour is the beginning, not the end.

Business Education in Transformation

Different career stages, changing organisational needs and the knowledge economy promote the need to critically think about what type of education is provided by which school for which purpose. Universities are good at education for knowledge, but not at education for action.

Europe's Business School Big Bang

The Bologna Accord will transform the face of higher education in Continental Europe over the course of the next decade. The traditional Continental education system offering a first degree of 5 years duration will be split into two components of 3+2 or 4+1 becoming structured more like the Anglo-American system of a first degree followed by a masters programme. Kai Peters discusses some of the likely impacts of this change from the perspective of employers, universities and students.
