I think one of the great values of stepping into this kind of environment, number one, and perhaps slightly outside of Ashridge’s core offering, is the fact that I have some space and time to think. I have some opportunity for reflection and review. And because of the range of organisations sitting in the room wrestling with not dissimilar issues to mine, I get a range of perspectives and insights from others on the course.

What it’s actually given me is structure, it’s given me tools, it’s given me methodology, and it’s given me a new insight on which to approach organisational design.

We’ve had an academic perspective and a research-based perspective brought into the room. We’ve had a org design consultant type of perspective brought into the room, and an individual who trades on doing this kind of work as an independent consultant also. And I think those three attributes have also enriched the experience of the course.

You know, I will definitely apply some of the practical tools, the models, and we got a chance to talk about some real live cases that we’re dealing with as well. So there are quite a few learnings that I’ll go back and apply.

What it does is gives you a process and some steps that you can follow, that will enable you to do organisation design and enable you to come up with an appropriate design for your business.

For me it has been absolutely wonderful. It has been a very great experience. On one side because the course itself and the materials are very useful, and on the other side because I’ve been around 15 people who have the same problems I have but in their organisation. Hearing them talk gives you a lot of perspective about your problems and you discover that many of your problems are repeated in other organisations. And some of the solutions that some of these people have given to them can be used in your organisation as well.

It is not your basic organisation development 101 type of course, but if you want to get into more depth, and if you want to get into more practicalities, but also want to learn and want to understand about the theory and what lies underneath it, I think then this is the right course.
