Getting to Ashridge

Arriving by road
As you approach Ashridge, signposts indicate that it is a private toll road. Please take care when driving over the ramps on this section of road. Open-air parking facilities are available. If coming by car, we advise you to leave your luggage in your vehicle until you have checked in, so that Reception may direct you to park and unload near the residential buildings. Petrol and garage services can be obtained in Berkhamsted which is 4 miles (6 kilometres) from Ashridge.

Arriving by rail
The nearest railway station is Berkhamsted, 4 miles (6 km) from Ashridge. Trains to Berkhamsted depart from Euston Station in central London and the journey time is approximately 35 minutes.

Arriving by air
Ashridge is approximately a 45-minute drive from London Heathrow, and 1.5 hours from London Gatwick, via the M25 Motorway. We can make arrangements for a car to meet you at the airport if you wish. Please give at least 48 hours' notice. A charge will be made for this service, details of which can be obtained by telephoning Ashridge on +44 (0)1442 843491.
The driver will be waiting for you in the arrival hall at the airport. If for some reason (such as a changed arrival time) this is not the case, go to the Information Desk and ask for the driver to be paged. Should this be unsuccessful telephone Ashridge on 01442 843491 for advice. If you decide to hire a taxi, make sure it is a properly registered vehicle and agree the fare before starting the journey.

Please note that the directions below are the simplest routes, but not necessarily the shortest. In-car satellite navigation systems may not agree with all the routes and you are advised to print a copy of the Ashridge map which shows preferred routes with a red arrow.

From Berkhamsted

  • At the junction of the High Street/London Road and Kings Road/Lower King’s Road at the traffic lights in the town centre, follow signs for the railway station by turning into Lower King’s Road.
  • Immediately past the station turn sharp left under the railway bridge (Brownlow Road).
  • Go straight on, over the small roundabout (with castle ruins on your right) and follow the road as it bears right.
  • Turn left at T-junction (into New Road).
  • Turn left again at the next T-junction (there is a War Memorial in front of you and ‘Ashridge’ is signposted to the left).
  • Keep straight on through the forest for about 2 miles/3 km (please note that there are speed ramps and deer crossing).
  • Ashridge is on your right. Please park in the Visitors’ Car Park and report to reception in the Main Building.

From Aylesbury

  • Take the A41 towards Watford until exit A416 signposted ‘Chesham’.
  • Follow signs to Berkhamsted town centre and go straight across the traffic lights into Lower King’s Road (in the direction of the railway station).
  • Continue as Berkhamsted route above.

From M25

  • Exit from M25 at junction 20 and join the A41 towards Aylesbury.
  • Take the exit signposted ‘Bourne End, Berkhamsted, Boxmoor’ and follow directions to Berkhamsted town centre.
  • Continue as Berkhamsted route above.

From the North

  • Leave M1 at junction 11 and follow A505 to Dunstable.
  • Keep going straight and cross A5.
  • Carry straight on over the next roundabout onto B489 towards Aston Clinton.
  • Turn left onto B4506 towards Dagnall (Dagnall Road) at the next roundabout (there is a pub/restaurant on the right-hand side).
  • Cross A4146 towards Berkhamsted and turn left for Little Gaddesden at the top of the hill.
  • Turn right 100 metres past Bridgewater Arms (pub on left-hand side) into Ashridge. Ashridge is on your left (the entrance is just after the toll gate - no fee payable for Ashridge visitors). Please park in the Visitors’ Car Park and report to reception in the Main Building.

Alternative route from the North

  • Leave M1 at junction 8 (Hemel Hempstead) and go straight through Hemel Hempstead until you see signs for Berkhamsted and the A41.
  • Take the A41 towards Aylesbury then follow signs for Berkhamsted.
  • Continue as Berkhamsted route above.

From M40

  • Leave M40 at junction 2 taking A355 to Amersham and continue to Chesham.
  • From Chesham take the A416 to Berkhamsted town centre.
  • Go straight across the traffic lights into Lower King’s Road (in the direction of the railway station).
  • Continue as Berkhamsted route above.
