Ashridge International Research Conference 2009

Ashridge International Research Conference 2009

The theme of this year's Ashridge International Research Conference was Global Leadership, Global Ethics?: In search of the ethical leadership compass.

The conference brought together academic debate and corporate perspectives from around the world on the conference topic and was aimed at scholars in ethics, international business, organisational behaviour, CSR, economics, management and leadership, as well as executive leaders and policy makers engaged in devising and practicing ethical leadership policies at home and abroad.

Keynote Addresses

The Keynote speakers were brilliant: they attended the whole conference, and gave their addresses on the last day, which worked out very well.

  • Professor Deborah Poff, Professor of Philosophy, University of Northern British Columbia in Canada, President-elect of Brandon University, Canada and founder-editor of the Journal of Business Ethics summarized the main outcomes from the papers presented and then gave her own address.

  • Mr Tony Ward looked at global ethical leadership from a practical experience perspective, partly reflecting his work with BAA.

  • Professor Phil Harris, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Business, Enterprise and Lifelong Learning and Westminster Chair of Marketing and Public Affairs at the University of Chester, UK, and Editor of the Journal of Public Affairs discussed ethical leadership from the perspective of that great often forgotten leader, Macchiavelli.

CEO Forum

A Forum of CEOs started off the conference, chaired by Ashridge CEO Professor Kai Peters, setting the tone, the pace and interaction mode so typical for Ashridge events. We heard introductions from:

  • Mr Trevor Bish-Jones, CEO of mypeople.com, formerly CEO of Woolworths
  • Mr. Richard Fenning, CEO Control Risk
  • Mr. Bob Leaf, CEO of Robert Leaf Consultants, and formerly CEO of Burson Marstellar International

followed by a whirlwind discussion.

Conference Sessions

The main part of the conference consisted of the working sessions that all took place in the Ashridge Main House: in the Lady Marian Alford Room, the Old Library and the Hoskins Room. Over 25 exciting papers led to challenging debates amongst the 45 conference participants from 13 countries. Full conference programme
